Must-Have Newborn Essentials: A Guide for New Parents
Welcoming a new baby is both thrilling and a tad overwhelming, right? As new parents, we all want to be prepared with everything our little bundle of joy might need. To help you cut through the chaos of baby products, we’ve created a list of must-have newborn essentials. These will make those first few months a bit smoother and a lot more enjoyable for both you and your baby.

1. Diapers and Wipes
Diapers: You’re going to need a mountain of these, so stock up on newborn-sized diapers. I swear by Target’s Up & Up brand, but I also used cloth diapers with my boys. Cloth diapers can save money in the long run, though they do have a higher upfront cost.
Wipes: Opt for gentle, fragrance-free wipes to keep your baby’s delicate skin irritation-free. Target’s Up & Up sensitive wipes are my absolute favorite! Plus, Target often runs deals like getting a $30 gift card with a $100 diaper purchase—score!
2. Clothing
Onesies: Simple, comfy, and versatile, onesies are a newborn wardrobe staple. Look for ones with easy snap closures for quick diaper changes. The kimono-style onesies are super handy since you don’t have to fully undress the baby to change them.
Sleepers: Soft, cozy sleepers keep your baby warm and comfy at night. I love the ones with fold-over cuffs so you don’t need mittens. We keep our house cooler, so I use fleece sleepers and a swaddle to keep baby warm and cozy.
Socks and Mittens: Keep those tiny feet warm with soft socks and prevent scratches with mittens or fold-over cuffs on their clothes.
3. Feeding Supplies
Bottles and Nipples: Even if you’re breastfeeding, having a few bottles on hand is essential for pumping or supplementing. Choose bottles with nipples that mimic the natural shape of a breast to make the transition smoother.
Breast Pump: A good breast pump can be a game-changer if you plan to breastfeed. It allows you to express milk and store it for later. I’ve used three different breast pumps over my motherhood journey, and each one has its own perks.
Formula: If you’re formula feeding, stock up on high-quality formula suitable for your newborn’s nutritional needs. I exclusively breastfed my older boys, but our daughter spent some time in the NICU and needed supplementation. Similac instant formula was our lifesaver during those months.
4. Sleep Essentials
Crib or Bassinet: Give your baby a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Ensure it meets current safety standards. The Halo Bassinest is my top recommendation, especially if you’re a C-section mama like me!
Swaddle Blankets: Swaddling can help soothe your baby and promote better sleep. Look for breathable, soft blankets or swaddle sacks with Velcro closures for ease.
White Noise Machine: A white noise machine can help create a calming environment and drown out household noises that might wake your baby.
5. Health and Safety
Baby Frida Essentials Kit: This kit has everything you could possibly need for your precious baby! But if you prefer just the basics, here are the essentials:
Thermometer: A reliable digital thermometer is essential for monitoring your baby’s health.
Nail Clippers: Baby nails grow quickly, and sharp nails can lead to scratches. Use baby-specific nail clippers to keep them trimmed.
First Aid Kit: Have a basic first aid kit on hand, including baby-friendly items like saline drops, a nasal aspirator, and baby-safe pain relievers.
6. Travel Gear
Car Seat: A car seat is a non-negotiable essential. Ensure it’s properly installed and suitable for your baby’s size and weight. We’ve tried the Nuna Pipa and Graco car seats, but Maxi-Cosi has been our favorite!
Baby Carrier: Babies love to be carried, but we can’t always just stand there and hold them! The Baby K’tan is fantastic for newborns because it’s easy to use and keeps them close so they can sleep while you get things done. Once your baby has head control, a ring sling is another great option.
Stroller: A lightweight, easy-to-fold stroller makes outings much more convenient. Look for one with good maneuverability and plenty of storage options. I always recommend a versatile stroller like the Evenflo Reversi, which you can find at Walmart. If you plan on having more than one baby, the Wonderfold Wagon could be a fantastic option for you!
Diaper Bag: Choose a spacious diaper bag with plenty of compartments to keep everything organized when you’re on the go. I’ve tried countless diaper bags, but my favorite is a backpack from Target. You don’t always have to go with what everyone else is using—find what works best for you!
7. Bathing and Hygiene
Baby Bathtub: A small, secure baby bathtub makes bath time easier and safer. We opted for a portable baby tub because we do a lot of moving and traveling.
Gentle Baby Wash and Shampoo: Use products designed for newborns’ sensitive skin. Shea Moisture Lavender Baby Wash is fantastic! It didn’t irritate our kids’ skin and helped relax them, setting the stage for a good bedtime routine.
Soft Towels and Washcloths: Keep your baby warm and dry with soft, absorbent towels and washcloths. We discovered muslin towels with our daughter, and they’re a game-changer. The typical microfiber towels feel awful on my hands, so I doubt the baby likes them either.
8. Comfort and Soothing
Pacifiers: Pacifiers can help soothe your baby between feedings. We mainly used them at nighttime to help the babies calm down. My kiddos tended to grow out of them and preferred the comfort of nursing, as most breastfed babies do.
Baby Swing or Bouncer: A swing or bouncer can be great for keeping your baby entertained and comfortable while you get things done around the house. Just make sure it’s safe—positional asphyxiation is a major concern, so always keep an eye on your baby!
Getting ready for a newborn can feel overwhelming, but having the right essentials can be a total game-changer! These must-have items will help you care for your baby and make the transition into parenthood so much smoother. Remember, every baby is unique, so tweak this list based on what works best for your little one. You’ve got this—happy parenting!
